Abstract

This paper aims to estimate whether beneficiaries of unconditional transfer programs such as Renda Mínima are associated differently in terms of labor supply decision comparatively to beneficiaries of conditional cash transfer programs, Bolsa Escola. Considering Heckman’s (1979) procedure, propensity score matching and using POF 2002-2003 data set, which allows us to identify the characteristic of the benefit, comparatively to non-beneficiaries, our results suggest that women beneficiaries of Renda Minima are associated with a lower probability to be employed (7 p.p.). Last, men whose domicile receives Bolsa Escola presents higher probability to participate in the market (2 p.p.), however once in the market they seem to work less hours (3%). We do not find evidence for difference in labor supply response among beneficiaries of these two programs.
