Abstract

This paper presents a descriptive analysis of the indicators and determinants of schooling repetition, advance and evasion in Brazil, for the end of the cycles series, between 1984 and 1997. We use a data set called Pesquisa Mensal de Emprego (PME) that follows the same individuals over time. We try to find the determinants of the selection of individuals through the schooling cycle, focusing on the analysis of the family characteristics and their effects on the probabilities of success. We conclude that their effects are more important in the more advanced series and act mainly through their effects on the schooling advance. Moreover, over time the family characteristics have lost part of their importance, which suggests a democratization of the schooling progress.
