Abstract

This paper examines the existence of gender bias in household consumption, savings behavior and labor supply in Brazil. In spite of finding some differences in consumption, possibly due to asymmetric gender preferences, our strongest results are very strong gender bias in mothers´ labor supply. These biases are verified in different model specifications and are entirely consistent with the substitution of mothers´ work by girls in the household production function.
