Abstract

In this paper we evaluate the international scientific output of Brazilian economics departments by impact-weighted published pages and impact-weighted pages per capita. We focus on two distinct sample periods, 1969-2001 e 1995-2001, and only on departments that are affiliated with National Association of Graduate Programs in Economics (Anpec). The most internationally productive Brazilian departments by the criteria above are: EPGE/FGV, PUC-RJ, USP, UnB, UFF, and UFRJ. Comparing top Brazilian departments with their North-American and European counterparts show that, apart from EPGE/FGV and PUC-RJ, the best Brazilian departments still lag substantially behind. EPGE/FGV and PUC-RJ’s position in the international North-American and European rankings are, respectively, 134th and 90th and 166th and 120th and cannot be considered excellent.
