Abstract

Using the structure of industrial employment, wages and firms according to its distribution across regions and sectors, this paper attempts to set patterns for the Brazilian industry agglomerations. It is used the statistical technique of cluster analysis to regional data of the country. Four basic patterns are identified in 2003, which evolves to five different ones at the end of the period. These groups are distinguished according to the concentration of firms, employment and wages in the various sectors. Most agglomerations are characterized by a high concentration in traditional industries, but there is an increase of those with a relatively high percentage of modern industries. The results confirm the diversity of the country, suggesting that the development of industry can be achieved through different industrial structures according to the characteristics of each region.
