Abstract

The recent economic dynamics of Brazil has increased the demand for skilled labor, especially engineers, raising a number of questions about the shortage of skilled workers. One way to avoid this problem in the future would be to develop a long run planning for engineering formation, based on consistence projections of demand for these specific types of labor. Aiming to support public policies in this subject, this paper applies a detailed simulation methodology for projection of demand and use of engineers in the Brazilian economy. Our methodology takes into account various engineering specialties, a wide range of sectoral and regional data for employment, a macroeconomic scenario and a detailed computable general equilibrium (CGE) model. The results points to which types of engineering would be more necessary in a future scenario for the Brazilian economy.
