Abstract

This paper provides estimations of labor demand parameters for the Brazilian manufacturing sector. We use microdata from a Brazilian monthly establishment level survey to study the evolution of employment-wage elasticity and the speed of employment adjustment between 1985 and 1997. This task is based on several short panels containing longitudinal information at the establishment level. Estimated values of wage elasticity vary according to the model specification. Values of wage elasticity vary from 0 to ñ0.3 when employment is measured by number of workers. When we use number of hours paid, estimated values are higher (reaching ñ1 in mid 90ís) and oscillates much more. The estimates for the speed of employment adjustment parameter are stable around 0.5, which imply a quite fast employment adjustment in Brazil when compared to international evidence or even to prior aggregate data estimations for Brazil.
