Education of youth and adults in Brazil: determinants of high school attendance

Abstract

One of the main challenges of the Brazilian educational policy is to understand the reasons for the so-called crisis of high school. Alternatively the regular high school, youngsters from the age of 17 can opt for the education of youth and adults. In this article, we describe the factors associated with transitions in and out of regular and adult education, as well as transfer of students between modalities. Furthermore, we provide evidence that the EJA rivals the regular high school, encouraging students in the right age to attend school to migrate to the education of youth and adults.
