Abstract

This article analyzes how individual and local factors impact the decision of the individual to be employed in an occupation of the artistic core of the creative class in Brazil. Using microdata from the Brazilian census 2010, information from the Culture Supplement of the Municipal Basic Information Research and municipal expenditure data by function of the National Treasury, we estimated multilevel models in an attempt to understand the key elements that affect the probability of being occupied in activities of that industry. The main findings suggest that age, educational level, and migrant status are factors positively associated with the chances of occupation in this sector. It is also observed that individuals living with spouse or partner, as well as those who claim to be the residential unit provider, have lower chances of being employed in the creative artistic core. As for occupational characteristics, working in the household, being informal in the main job and having more than one job are factors positively associated with this probability. Finally, in terms of local characteristics, the positive effects of the diversity rate show that more tolerant and liberal cities have a greater force of attraction for cultural workers. Another variable that showed significant impact is the index of cultural amenities, which showed a significant effect on the chances of being employed in the creative sector.
