Abstract

The contingent valuation method (CVM) is one of the standard approaches for valuing public goods. This paper presents the basic issues concerning the CVM and its application to the valuation of projects for the improvement of some important Brazilian river basin. This application is based on referendum questions in the so called bidding games format, which makes possible to use a procedure based on the concept of bootstrapping to obtain the standard errors of the parameters estimates and of the willingness to pay estimate.
