This paper investigates whether the increase in foreign banks' capital share in Brazilian financial institutions improved the technical efficiency and productivity of Brazilian banking industry. The investigation is carried out through a data envelopment analysis (DEA), which allows the direct calculation of technical efficiency, for three groups of banks: private domestic banks, foreigner banks and public banks. A Malmquist's total productivity index is also calculated. The results show that the technical efficiency of the Brazilian banking indushy has not improved as much as expected, although the technological progress has increased its overall productivity. Productivity gains were larger in foreign banks than in private domestic banks. According to the technological leadership test, proposed by Marinho and Benegas (2002). the industry's technological pattern is determined by private domestic banks.Downloads
