Abstract

The phenomenon of domestic violence against women has grown particularly in developing countries, such as Brazil. Thus, the present study aims to analyze the determinants of such violence in the country. For this, a hierarchical logit model was estimated at two levels. The results show that the woman’s age, years of schooling, income and employment of the husband correlate negatively with the probability of being victimized. Regarding the variables of the second level, it was verified that the presence of protection mechanisms correlates positively with the probability of being victimized.
