Abstract

This paper investigates the empirical relation between openness and income inequality across nations utilizing panel data. Initially it discusses the meaning of openness and the correlation between different proxies of openness across countries and along time. Then a model is estimated using a panel of countries from 1960 to 1985. Instrumental variables are used to deal with simultaneity of openness and income. The results show that openness does not explain income disparity across nations, thus reinforcing the argument that the connection between growth and openness is not clear in the empirical literature yet.
