Abstract

The aim of this paper is to model the demographic dynamics of Brazilian firms. The methodology is based on the Stochastic Processes Theory. The model allows the identification of survival patterns of Brazilian firms, such as life expectancy and labor demand of micro, small, medium and large companies. It also permits to identify the long-term trend of companies profiles in terms of number of employees and firms´ age. The data used covers the period 1995-2002 and has its origins in the Relação Anual de Informações Sociais (Rais), a report compulsorily filled out every year by Brazilian enterprises, and sent to the Labor Ministry with information about workers of the formal sector of the economy.
