Abstract

This paper examines the earnings differentials between American and Brazilian workers. Firstly, we make a comparative description of the workers’ characteristics by sectors, education, age, occupation, average productivity and earnings inequality. Then, we decompose the earnings differentials between the workers of the two countries into observable characteristics and the returns to these characteristics, using the methodology of Oaxaca. The characteristics that most explain the differences in mean wages are education, average productivity and the constant term of the regression, which captures differences in the conditional mean earnings between workers of the two countries.
