Abstract

Structural equations for earnings, labor supply and health were estimated for adult workers in Brazil by three stage least squares, using the Heckman procedure to correct for sample selectivity bias. Based on the National Health and Nutrition Survey [Inan, IBGE e IPEA (1989)] it was found simultaneity between health and earnings for men workers, such that an increase in health increases earnings, and also an increase in earnings increases health. There was a positive effect of health on labor supply for men, but a negative one for female spouses. Moreover, the number of working hours positively affected the health status of female spouses. Other results confirmed the importance of basic infrastructure in attaining adequate health conditions and detected the negative effect of smoking on health.
