Abstract

This paper presents a regional analysis of some explanatory variables (economic and social demographic), for income inequality among persons occupied in the Brazilian agriculture ín 1981 and 1990. More specifically, it aims at investigating the relations between the composition of the population occupied according to these variables and inequality (through static decomposition), as well as between changes in this composition and inequality' (dynamic decomposition). The source of the data is the PNAD. The analysis shows that occupation is the main factor associated with inequality, and indicates the predominance of the income effect in explaining the variation of total inequality between 1981 and 1990 in most of the geographical regions analysed, considering the agriculture population according to occupational categories. The results indicate that the question of inequality in personal income in the Brazilian agriculture must consider the concentration of land ownership as a priority, simultaneously with policies to improve education.
