Abstract

This paper analyze the differences in the composition of the occupation and income between metropolitan regions of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo in 1990. We search for empirical evidences for the wage gap between these two regions. The higher incidence of traditional services sectors, self employed workers and informal wage earners in occupation of Rio de Janeiro is an important aspect to explain the wage gap between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Moreover, we observe a higher income variation in Rio de Janeiro, where the average income of the young and less educated workers is relatively inferior.
