Abstract

This paper evaluates the effects over income distribution of public spending in education in Peru. Transfers from public budget are analyzed in two different ways: the first one describes the impact of family income, and the second one evaluates the distribution of public education expenditure accross different socioeconomic strata. From the first point of view, the public education system will be considered a progressive mechanism of redistribution: poor families receive a transfer that, as a proportion of their own income, is greater than the one received by rich families; from the second point of view, the redistributive mechanism is regressive: the poorest have a larger proportion of their own potential demand that is not taken care of by institutions of public education.
