Abstract

Previous applications of the linkage concept to Brazilian data have used measures that either do not allow a disaggregation of total linkage into a forward and backward component, or are based on mathematically inconsistent disaggregation procedures. In this paper we provide mathematically consistent calculations of the forward, backward, and total linkages in the Brazilian economy in 1980. Our results reveal, among other things, that high linkages cannot be exclusively associated with modern industrial sectors.
