Abstract

This paper analyzes the behavior of wives in Brazilian labor market as well as their contribution to the capacity of their families to adapt to changes in socioeconomic conditions, between 198.3 and 1988. Specifically, it investigates the interrelationship between husband's earnings and spouse's labor force participation. The main result obtained is the estimation of negative and significant husband's work earning effects. This is in accordance with the idea that there is a correlation between the spouse's labor force participation and husband's earnings.
