Abstract

This paper analyses the adaptations undertaken when a particular technology is transferred between countries. The technology studied is used for general milk processing in the dairy industry and the countries involved are Sweden where the technology was designed and Uruguay to which it was exported. For both countries translog cost functions are used and we compare the resulting estimates for price and substitution elasticities as well as the technological and scale biases estimated. Our results indicate that the technology used in Uruguay does not differ very much from the original Swedish technology in its basic design but there is still some adaptation to local factor prices.
