Abstract

In this paper we investigate some consequences of poverty on children and youth's welfare as well as some of the mechanisms for the transmission of poverty. Specifically, based on PNAD-1987 we describe how school attendance and child labor force participation are related with household income. The analysis is accomplished by children's gender and age, as well as considering their area of residence. We show that child labor force participation rate and the proportion not attending school are: a) increasing with age; b) greater for males than for females; c) greater in Sao Paulo than in Fortaleza; and d) decreasing with household resources.
