Abstract

This paper examines the income distributional impacts of export growth and composition in Brazil using a computable general equilibrium model. In contrast to other studies, the authors find that exports of non primary products have less of an adverse impact on income distribution than exports of primary products. The current study emphasizes the importance of relative price changes in determining the impact of export growth on the distribution of income. Multipliers impacts of changes in exports are also calculated. In this paper an overview of trade policies and export trends is followed by a description of the data and model structure. The results of multiplier simulations and an interpretation of their significance is provided
