Pobreza no Brasil: métodos de análise e resultados
Abstract
This paper presents selected results from the research project in progress at the IEI/UFRJ on the subject of poverty measurement in Brazil for social planning. The first part of this text describes concepts and methods used in this paper. The second part of it displays a selection of results from the application of the different methods to the identification of the poor. Basically, these methods rely on personal income, nutrition and other basic needs indicators. We present information on the size, location and socio-economic features of the poor, in 1974/75 (Endef data) and in 1985 (PNAD-1985 data). This allowed an evaluation of the dimension and configuration (heterogeneity) of poverty and provides a comparison of the results obtained with the various identification methods used. Inter alia, these results lead to the conclusion that deprivations are not necessarily coincident, requiring ¢specific social indicators analyses and intervention programs.Downloads
