Abstract

This paper assesses the impact of the alternative foreign trade strategies of export promotion (EP) and import substitution (IS) on the distribution of income in Brazil. The distributive performance of domestic goods is also examined. Using a. modified input-output technique, our results reveal that the size distribution of income under AP is more equal than under IS or production of domestic goods, but only slightly more so. Hence, EP cannot be seen as a panacea for Brazil's extreme income inequality.
